No matter the business model whether it is a start-up or an enterprise it isn’t immune to cyber attacks. Every business should use strong cyber security measures to keep their business data and their customers safe online. The following are some of the measure a start-up should include:

    · Prevention of spyware or malware by implementing Internet Security.

    · Avoiding weak password that can be guessed or brute forced.

    · Updating outdated software or firmware

    · Subvert system feature or system.

The area where most firm fails to implement security is updating the firmware and applying new security patches for your operating system, web browser and all other software on your devices to keep them secure. In many case you can set the software to auto update itself if you can’t find time to update it yourself.

I found that making regular backups of your key systems and data will be helpful in an event where there is a chance to lose data like a possible ransomware attack or server failure. Keep copies securely off-site will make sure that it’s safe.

Every business should use a strong passwords and change them regularly. Also, consider using two factor authentication for added security. If possible adding multi factor authentication will greatly increase the security, also use different passwords for different websites/services or consider using a reputable password management tool.

Firewall is the first line of defence against online attackers and is a critical part of your network security. A firewall can be either a physical hardware device or a software tool. Both types are responsible for checking incoming data traffic and determining whether to block or allow it through to its destination. Firewalls are effectively gatekeepers between your computer and the internet, and one of the major barriers to prevent the spread of cyber threats such as viruses and malware.

When you start a business the main goal is to generate income and implementing security team is a burden so most of the times security isn’t given enough attention and chances are the basics security implementation won’t encrypt sensitive data and it possible for a potential hacker to steal them. So focusing on encrypting sensitive data and do not send passwords or other sensitive data via email unencrypted are some important measures to be taken.

There is a possibility of new business falling for phishing or ransomware attacks by clicking on links disguised as a potential investor so be cautious when you see a unfamiliar link in your inbox or social media.
